文书建议：对于Data Science这样的理工科专业，推荐用简洁朴实的语言来写，主要是看重文章的逻辑性，在书写经历的时候，一方面要注意有细节，另一方面也要注意不要把太多专业方面的细节写到文书中，重点应该放在自己的收获和体会上，要让招生官读完文章能对自己有一个立体的了解，而不是为了impress招生官把专业的东西写的很难放到文书里。

My passion for becoming a data scientist stems from my curious and adventurous personality, an aspiration for finding the intrinsic connection and mechanism between everyday things, and an ambition to harness cutting-edge data science techniques to help people make the right decisions.

As an insurance major student, I’ve built solid quantitative as well as economical background. I have maintained a high GPA of 3.XX, won a scholarship and an honorary title of advanced individual. I have extensively used statistical tools such as STATA, SAS, MATLAB and LINGO in research and course projects, and I am taking C++ to enhance my programming skills this semester. In the Statistics course, I led a team to find out the determinate factors that influence college students’ English learning effects. As the team leader, I was in charge of every procedure from making improvement to the questionnaires, supervising the statistical analysis, to verifying the final result and writing the course paper. Through statistical analysis, we were able to reveal interesting facts about English learning and give out valuable advice for English learners. It is enjoyable to address a familiar problem from new angles and reveal counter-intuitive findings from well-designed experiments. I felt a sense of accomplishment when our lecturer told us our course paper was the best in class and it would be set as a standard for future presentation.

A colorful campus life is another indispensible part of myself. As a team captain of the Video Department of our university’s News Center, I have gradually enhanced my decision-making capability in this fast-paced work environment. The continuously changing situation also had a demand for meticulousness and double-checking at work in case things deviate. Video shooting and editing is a time-consuming procedure, as full-time students and a team we were always on a tight schedule. I learned to make quick and tough decisions considering all the uncertainties, always prepare a Plan B or even Plan C to overthrow my whole plan at any rate, and at the same time strive to achieve perfection under imperfect conditions. Despite all the difficulties, I enjoyed breaking through the limit of myself and accomplished one progress after another with my teammates. Nearing the end of my tenure, I was given the “Most Dedicated Veteran Award” for our team’s high-quality works and my outstanding leadership.In addition to enriching my college life as an interesting and versatile person, I have competed in the Golden Autumn Photography Competition and won the top 10 out of more than 250 competitors, beat the university Group Gymnastics Game, led a history research project and made a short documentary film, planned for adventurous trips to Thailand, and worked as a tour guide for Wuhan international Cherry Blossom Festival.

During summer and winter breaks, I looked for internships to gain real-world experience. In my recent internship to CITIC bank, I worked at Financial Institutions Department. This department deals with institutional clients and the transactions are in units of millions. However, I was quite disappointed to find that advanced analytical skill was not needed in my department. Fund Transfer Pricing was made by the head office; what account managers did everyday was to use their social skills to pull or make deposit. It also lacked efficiency because of too much red tape. My job simply included using Excel to record and calculate guiding prices, and sending them to my Account Manager every morning and etc. I noticed that a lot of the working procedures had huge room for human errors. If I made a mistake in recording the data, which could happen no matter how meticulously I was at my work, it might compromise the work of a whole department and put the entire bank’s reputation on the line. I felt that with expertise in data science and information systems, I could help the bank optimize its working procedures to improve working efficiency and eliminate human errors. I believe data science can not only help the manager make more successful deals, but also revolutionize the entire banking industry. I wish to further my study in this field and become a member of the pioneering force in this revolution.

To achieve my career ambition of becoming a data scientist, I wish to systematically study Data Science at Columbia University’s Master of Science in Data Science program. I am deeply attracted by the program’s specialized curriculum and the strong faculty group of over 200 professors and industry experts from various disciplines, which will arm me with a solid technical foundation as well as a forward-thinking mindset to succeed in this field. The interdisciplinary nature of the program will encourage me to expand my knowledge and skills in many aspects – I can sit in a social science class to discuss controversial issues in our society, or I can work together with students from Computer Science department to develop innovative decision-making tools for enterprise managers, I can also enhance my business acumen and presentation skills in a business school class, etc. Additionally, the program’s supreme reputation in the data industry will benefit me tremendously when I seek employment upon graduation. I heard that many of the recent graduates of your program are already assuming key positions in leading technical and financial companies. I wish to follow in their footsteps and become an excellent data scientist in the future. I believe attending Columbia will be a life-changing experience for me and I sincerely hope you can offer me a position in the incoming class.
